Top 10 United States corporate buyers of renewable energy in 2020

A recent REBA report outlines the leading players and shows that the main sought-after renewable energy source among leading companies in the country is utility-scale solar power. In the year 2020, Amazon was the Number 1 U.S. corporate green energy purchaser, acquiring over 3.16 GW. The most sought-after green resource amongst these major corporations of the nation was also the utility-scale solar power. This is thanks to the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA), which is a member-based group representing and lobbying on account of several of the country’s largest purchasers of corporate energy.

In its second yearly Deal Tracker Top 10 report, REBA reported that with the record-breaking 10.6 GW of agreed power, U.S. companies once again demonstrated their determination and dedication to renewable energy. “It is noteworthy that the corporate sector has announced almost 100 major agreements while managing the effects of the global pandemic,” REBA Chief executive Miranda Ballentine stated. 97 percent of the procurements monitored in the year 2020 accounted for REBA’s community members. 72 percent of the 98 deals represented in the full study were for solar projects on a utility-scale.

Kara Hurst, Amazon’s vice president in charge of sustainability, stated the firm is making “large investments in solar and wind power as it can help reduce carbon emissions our business activities quickly.” By the year 2025, Amazon is on track to operate on 100% sustainable power, 5 years ahead of the initial 2030 goal. Based on Amazon’s acquisitions last year, in the year 2021, the company started to make solar deals. “We believe that all firms have a part to play in safeguarding the planet,” Hurst stated. We co-founded The Climate Pledge to inspire cooperation, with signatories pledging to achieve net-zero carbon by the year 2040, 10 years advance of the Paris Agreement.’

In its report, REBA reported that businesses, half of which serve first-time energy consumers, responsible for 25% of the overall volume-navigated market obstacles reported through creative contracting mechanisms and cooperation with relevant parties, like utilities, energy transaction groups, local communities, as well as industry leaders. While the information technology (IT) market has continued to account for the highest amount of procurement, the manufacturing and materials market has become the top market for new buyers, as REBA has suggested the value of decarbonizing industrial supply chains. 2020 was the first and only year that many United States corporate energy buyers reported purchases such as battery storage, as per REBA, aligning with wider market trends as storage technology is becoming more available.
