Scientists and experts think that space solar power stations could mitigate our energy problems

Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky could have unravelled the answer to our growing energy needs a century ago. He explained that giant solar power stations in space could generate vast amounts of energy to Earth. Scientists have been working with this concept in recent years, and it appears that they will be making a breakthrough. The European Space Agency discovered the capacity of these projects and has dedicated its resources to support the exploration of this energy source.

The effects of climate change have become pronounced, forcing various agencies to start pursuing eco-friendly energy sources. The mitigation of these problems would require the transition to clean energy sources or other energy sources that have little to zero contribution to global warming.

Researchers have deeply delved into the renewable energy sector to develop reliable and affordable energy sources to encourage people to stop using fossil fuels for energy evolution and adopt clean energy. Nevertheless, the primary challenge that has discouraged this move is the unreliability of the energy sources in supplying energy continuously. Renewables like wind and solar energy are viable when there are wind and solar radiations; hence scientists are developing renewable energy storage technology to obtain more renewable energy when it is available.

A solution that the energy sector would work with maybe Tsiolkovsky’s concept of obtaining solar energy from space. Some of the benefits from this technology are that the solar station could rotate to intensify the solar radiations coming from the sun and concentrate them to the solar cells to generate more solar energy.

The challenge for this project would be the fixation of this huge structure and its deployment in space to start generating clean energy. One station would need to be 10 square kilometres big to generate enough solar energy that meets the required capacity. Additionally, the material used to develop the solar panels would be heavy to ensure they do not falter while turning in space. The primary challenge would be the expense of deploying the station to space using rockets.

Scientists have realized that the solution to the problem could be developing numerous satellites and bringing them together to create a mega solar generator. A presentation three years ago by the California Institute of Technology demonstrated that solar cell tiles could encapsulate the satellites to maximize the production of solar energy.

The latest 3D simulation at the University of Liverpool displayed technology that could capture solar energy via solar sails installed on spacecraft. The researchers at the university explained that they are developing the technology to ensure that they can mount solar cells onto solar sail structures to develop the solar station in space.

Finally, the researchers are exploring the possibility of transferring solar energy as electromagnetic fields down to Earth before it is converted to electricity for distribution and consumption. It is likely that some of the energy may be lost during the conversion prompting scientists to find methods to increase the efficiency of the conversion process.
